Terrain Skiing:
How to master tough skiing like the experts

In 12 winters of teaching at Squaw Valley and Beaver Creek, I've evolved a set of lessons aimed at bringing students beyond the normal ski school progression, into real-world terrain problems. These lessons -- aimed at folks with advanced, intermediate and beginner skill sets -- have proved successful in helping people to improve control, balance and confidence in off-piste conditions: moguls, powder, crud, tight trees, heinous steeps and glare ice.

The book was first published as SKI Magazine's Master the Mountain. Despite the title, our fierce competitors at Snow Country Magazine reviewed the book and were kind enough to note that it's "full of mountain smarts and savvy."

Chris Fellows did the demo skiing (I had my leg in a cast when I wrote it), and Tom Lippert took the photos. $12.95 through Amazon, BN or your local bookseller. ISBN: 0809232022.

Alpine Ski Maintenance and Repair

This second edition has been around since 1989, but the stuff inside is still valid. The book is aimed at the skier who works at home with hand tools, and I guarantee that if you learn this stuff and use it, your skis will outlast your boots and you'll glide faster than any of your buddies.

Amazon sells the book for ten bucks, but you could also buy it from Jack Moore at Tognar Toolworks. While you're at the Tognar site, get the companion videotape, Ski Tuning with Hand Tools. In learning to flat-file and edge-file, there's no substitute for watching the way the hands move over the skis.

The Unofficial Guide to Skiing in the West

I wrote only the chapters on West Coast skiing, but after all, that's where the really interesting terrain lies. Why would anyone want to ski breathable powder on rounded summits in Colorado, when you could step off the precipitous spines of Squaw and Blackcomb to land in Pacific glop? The rest of the West was assembled by Lito Tejada-Flores, Peter Shelton, Ed Chauner and Bob Sehlinger. This is the third edition, current in 1999. $16 from Amazon (ISBN: 0028632788) and indispensable if you've never been out this way.
